It is often difficult for an untrained-eye to tell whether the bra you are wearing is the correct size and fit. Many women make the common mistake of wearing a bra that is too big around the back or too small in the cup.
Your bra should not ‘dig-in’ to you or be uncomfortable to wear, in fact, if you are wearing the correct bra size; you are likely to forget you are wearing a bra at all!
So let's go through the correct method of putting on a bra first. After this we you will be able to determine if your bra is the right fit or not.
Correct Method For Putting On A Bra
Step 1 - Put the bra straps on.
Lean forward and allow your breasts to ‘fall’ into the cups and fasten the bra at the back.
If you fasten your bra at the front and swing it around the back, you put excess strain on the bra elastics.
Step 2 - Put your right hand into the left bra cup and lift yourself into the bra. Repeat this action on the other side too. The wire should fit directly underneath the breast root, not ‘on’ it as this will cause discomfort.
Step 3 - Adjust the straps.
To adjust the straps drop the strap off your shoulder and adjust it so that it is comfortable to wear.
The straps should support the breast lightly but should not put too much pressure on the shoulders.
If there is too much pressure on the shoulders the back of the bra will ride up and your bust line will fall
forward appearing unsupported.
Is the fit of your bra correct?
The following fitting clues will help you decide whether your bra is the correct size and fit. Try on your bra and look at yourself in the mirror. Try and look for the tell-tale signs, mentioned below, that may indicate your bra is the wrong size.
The bra cup digs into your bust at the top creating a ‘double-bust’ effect
If the bra cups digs into your bust at the top, it is a sure sign that the bra cup is too small.
Try the next cup size up!
The centre front of the bra sits away from your body
If the centre of the bra sits away from your body, again it is sign that the underband of your bra is too big.
Try a smaller underband size and find out if this makes the centre of the bra sit close to your body.
The wires dig into your breast at the side
If the bra wires are digging into the side of your breasts, it is usually a sign that the cup size is too small.
Try a bigger cup size and see if this is more comfortable for you.
The bra cups are baggy
If the bra cups are baggy and there is a lot of space inbetween the top of the bra and your body.
Why not try a smaller cup size? This should improve the fit.
