The Speedo; a small but very controversial piece of swimwear, they can look oh so lovely on some yet almost horrific on others. Speedos are the swimwear equivalent of Marmite; you either love them or hate them.
Recently the Speedo has taken a nose dive in popularity with the favoured look being baggy shorts. However, some die-hard Lycra fans who will be disappointed by last month’s announcement from Alton Towers. Morwenna Angove, sales and marketing director for Alton Towers, said: "We feel this small brief style is not appropriate for a family venue so we are advising male bathers to wear more protective swimwear such as shorts.”
Could this destroy the already shaky relationship between the British male and the Speedo? A recent street poll by the Guardian suggests that perhaps the nation’s men aren’t too bothered by the announcement with the paper stating;
‘Asked if they preferred to swim and relax by the pool in short bathers, mid-length trunks, or longer board-shorts, the overwhelming majority of men on the street plumped for longer styles with many either laughing or recoiling in horror at the idea of sporting spandex’.
Perhaps this means the Speedo will become a thing of the past in Britain, something we only see on summer holidays in Europe, where its popularity has always, and still is, much stronger. In fact in France it is compulsory to wear Speedos in public pools, on grounds of hygiene. Let’s hope it doesn’t scare away the Brits!
