It was bound to be spectacular, but as the Christian Dior Haute Couture show began in Paris for autumn ‘09, the audience were a little surprised, if not enthralled. Models floated down the catwalk in a definite lack of clothing. With bras, corsets and suspenders on show, it seems underwear is the new outerwear.
Dior couture has been the elite of the fashion world for half a century. At the hands of John Galliano the collections have developed into spellbinding shows of theatre and fairytale. This season was no exception as jackets were embellished with detailed embroidery, transparent skirts worn with stockings and fifties style bras are paired with lavish, Cinderella ball gowns. These are some of the most expensive clothes on the planet and coveted by all.
The show was held at the home of Christian Dior, on the Avenue Montaigne. The scenario, titled ‘Fever in the Cabine’ was inspired by fifties photographs of Dior himself, but Galliano took it to a more sensual theme with a parade of lingerie and hourglass silhouettes. The underwear theme was carried through to the shoes, where stiletto straps were inspired by bra fastenings. Not since Madonna wore the iconic cone bra has corsetry played such a role in Dior’s collection.
The head of Dior’s haute couture revealed that garments could be adapted to be more wearable in public! That’s if you have tens of thousands spare cash, if not check out What Katie Did at Mio Destino for fifties inspired boudoir glamour.
