There’s a new trouser shape to play with this Spring. It’s not a full trouser, but not shorts, has a billowing shape and can be worn for day or night; it’s the Harem pant. The pants have a loose fit, tapering in at the ankle, traditionally with a side flap on the hip which buttons at the waist. They were popular in the 80’s and bear a striking resemblance to Princess Jasmine’s turquoise outfit.
Putting the 80’s and Disney movies aside, the harem pant is a top fashion item this season with a strong presence in the Spring/Summer catwalk shows of Calvin Klein, Miss Sixty, Betsy Johnson and Ralph Lauren. A very chic French editor was seen wearing them last season creating a sensation across the Channel.
Ralph Lauren’s collection had an African explorer theme with harem pants paired with shirts and straw hats in beige, khaki and white. Paul Smith went for a more relaxed, city chic look with tailored jackets over smart wide leg trousers. Only the slim and tall can work the harem pant look, otherwise it will make your legs look shorter. They can be a welcome alternative to the office wardrobe and are cooler to wear in the summer months than trousers. They are also a great choice to wear with heels in the evening. It is important that you pair such a pant with a fitted or structured shirt/top to balance out the proportions. Equally, why not pop a pair in the holiday luggage to wear over a bikini on the way to the beach for an elegant cover-up.
