Spring/ Summer 2009 Fashion

You’re probably aware that there’s something going on in the fashion world at the moment. If you’re in one of four cities, you may have noticed gorgeously dressed women and girls frantically running towards large tents, clambering in and out of black cars or hiding their partied-out dark circles under oversized sunnies.

That’s right; fashion week is upon us once more. New York and London have already passed, with Milan currently flaunting its wares and Paris set to follow.

To save you trawling through the endless shows, we’ve done the hard work for you and brought you a short and sharp edited lowdown of the winners so far to keep you in the style loop...

New York

Ralph Lauren: The recent trend for harem trousers looks set to continue, with Lauren opening the show with a pair of slouchy gold sequin numbers. Mix that with khaki shirts, turbans and safari style wrap dresses and you’ve got a collection that’s set to easily transfer from Out Of Africa and into the high street next season.

Marc Jacobs: Anything can happen at a Marc Jacobs show, and this season was no exception, with a collection that can only be described as a fusioned-jumble of Jacobs’ recent loves. An assortment of trends from lumber jack shirts, tweed, plaid, leather and metallic were thrown together. And what’s more, as to be expected from Jacobs, it seemed to work. Don’t mistake this for a careless collection-looking this messed up and thrown together is going to take a lot of work!

Alexander Wang: A relative new comer to the fashion scene, Wang’s SS09 collection was important for him to cling on to his crown as the ‘one to watch’. Tapping into grunge (which is set to return by the way) with an 80’s vibe, Wang didn’t pull any over the top surprises, which served to produce an infinitely wearable collection. Think slouchy trousers, sporty leather bombers and towering leather platforms- the boy done good.

Erdem: Super romantic, tremendously pretty and marvellously girly. That just about sums up this superb show, which heavily featured French lace, jewel encrusted details and sculptured satin. Each look was pure fantasy, from the tiered dresses, painted silk capes and beautiful 3D flower detailed dresses. Erdem may well just be fashion’s new love.

Luella: Who would’ve thought that orange, lilac and pink lace, combined with frills, tweed and veils would make SUCH an exciting and breathtaking collection?! Luella Bartley evidently knew something we didn’t (well, we do now), which is that psycadellic ladylike can work. Think nipped in waists, prom dresses, tweed two pieces and lace gloves, and you’ll be half way there.

Charles Anastase: Geek chic rules dans la maison Anastase. Glasses adorned the faces of models with loose unstyled hair; socks were wrinkled at the ankle and teamed with chunky knit cardigans thrown over dainty and delicate summer dresses. For this term only, geeks are super cool!
With so much to inspire next season, it may be time to create some space in those closets- and we haven’t even had Paris or Milan yet!

In fact, maybe just get another wardrobe...
